BTOpenzone has teamed up with Cardiff County Council to roll out a network of 50 new access points in the city centre. The hotspots will be based in payphone kiosks, council and commercial premises:
The service will be available to subscription and pay-as-you-go customers, with Cardiff Council to gain a share of the revenue generated from the project in return for its investment.
The launch is expected for the summer and will be followed by an 'intensive' marketing campaign to promote the benefits of Wi-Fi connectivity.
BT Wireless Broadband CEO, Chris Clark said: "Anybody who is in the centre of Cardiff for business or pleasure will be able to use their wireless-enabled laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA) and experience the speed of wireless broadband. And what Cardiff has done today, any other local authority can do tomorrow."Hopefully the wireless network will be more secure, easy to find and actually operate at a good speed - for a change.
