The UK's largest cable operator, NTL, has made an almost identical move to its friendly rival by boosting the speed of its own broadband service (e.g: 150Kbps to 300Kbs). Just like
Telewest, the prices remain identical:
ntl unveils series of broadband product initiatives to enhance competitiveness and cement broadband sector leadership
ntl Incorporated (NASDAQ: NTLI) today unveiled a series of initiatives to enhance the competitiveness and strength of its broadband product range. The Company is the largest single provider of broadband services in the UK with over one million residential customers using its high quality service and has over 30% broadband market share.
ntl is boosting its three broadband services to higher speeds, at no extra cost to customers. This will provide a significant competitive advantage, offering the highest speeds in the high volume entry-level and mid-tier sectors, while at the high end, ntl will offer 50% more speed than the main providers of ADSL.
New speeds
At entry level, the 150Kbps service increases to 300Kbps (£17.99), the mid tier service increases from 600Kbps to 750Kbps (£24.99), while at the high end the 1Mb service increases to 1.5Mb (£37.99).
The new speeds are being rolled out across the ntl cable network to existing and new customers. Customers will receive communication in advance of the speed increase.
ntl has an outstanding track record of innovation in broadband, having pioneered speed-tiering some years ago and launching the UKs first 1Mb service. Today it also unveils a number of other broadband initiatives:
ntl is linking with Openwave and Highwinds, both global leaders in internet technology, to enhance its email and newsgroups services for broadband customers. ntl customers will have access to a new state of the art email platform and one of the largest news group platforms in Europe, providing faster access speeds, greater storage volume and improved webmail access.
ntl has now completed a broadband technology trial featuring flexible bandwidth options and this has received excellent feedback from customers on the trial. This is the first completed trial of its kind in the UK.
ntls high-value premium content service, Broadband Plus, has made a fast start. This summer the line up will be boosted with the launch of PhotoBox, a provider of digital photography services, and MTV Live. This will complete the first phase of its development on time and with excellent customer feedback. This product provides £30/month of content available from ntl for only £3.99 with the first 3 months for free.
ntls innovative online customer service tool, Broadband Medic, launches this month providing customers with a quick and friendly interface to automatically diagnose and repair many connection or email problems.
Commenting on todays news, Simon Duffy, Chief Executive Officer of ntl, said: Our enhancement of the broadband product range is focused on customer needs. Our customers want more speed, better email access and more newsgroups to enjoy, and thats what were delivering. Our broadband services are faster, better and cheaper than those of our rivals. Over 35% of our total customers buy broadband from us, the highest in the UK. We are continuing to invest in maintaining our first-mover advantage established years ago when broadband was in its infancy.Sadly NTL failed to introduce a 3Mbps service, although you can bet that they're planning something similar.
