Mobile phone operator Orange has announced a 19th July 2004 launch date for its 3G broadband wireless network. Much like most of its rivals, Orange will first launch with a wireless data card and later using Handsets:
Launching on 19 July, the network will initially cover 66% of the population in the UK, making it the most 'extensive integrated' 2.5/3G network in the country according to Orange, who added that it would look to reach 80% coverage next year.
The mobile arm of France Telecom said it will launch its 3G Mobile Office Card, targeting business in the UK and offering speeds of up to 384 kbps later this month.
Pricing for the PC plug-in card will start at £10 per month with a one off fee of £170, with an unlimited-use package costing £75 per month and a one-off fee of £85.The operator blamed a lack of quality 3G handsets for the delay in brining that aspect of the service to market, echoing similar complaints from its rivals.
Given a little time the extra competition could help to push down data prices and make the technology more attractive to ordinary users. More @
