Manchester Fire Cuts BT ADSL Lines

Posted: 29th Mar, 2004 By: MarkJ
130,000 of BTs telephone line customers in the North West, including an unknown number of ADSL subscribers, have been cut off due to a major fire in a BT tunnel under Manchester city centre:

A BT spokesman said: "We don't know what caused the fire at this stage, but it is affecting more than 130,000 homes and businesses in Manchester.

The disruption will be widespread across the city and we won't know the extent of the problem until our engineers can access the tunnel.

We have teams standing by and they will go in as soon as the fire brigade give the all-clear.
"

Details are thin on the ground, although the fire, which started at 3:20am this morning, was last reported to have been under control.

We'll try to post any relevant updates as we see them. More @ BBC News Online.
