The Sunday Herald newspaper has reported on a frosty 'clash' (meeting) between BTs Ben Verwaayen and Ofcom's chairman Lord Currie concerning broadband ADSL.
Both appear to have strongly opposing views on the best way forward with Currie favouring a break-up:
The background is that, with the aim of opening up competition for broadband, BT staff had been instructed that not only were they not allowed to tell customers about BT's own broadband offering, they even had to pretend they had no such products.
Verwaayen snapped at Currie: 'You can put me in jail if you like but I'm not going to tell BT people to lie about our services.'
So far Lord Currie has resisted the temptation to have Verwaayen dispatched to the Scrubs but only a fool would bet against another clash between these two in future as efforts to create Broadband Britain intensify.
We can only hope that both can find some common ground, enough to build on and improve UK broadband, which is finally starting to show some real progress.
