The Interactive Retail in Media Group (IMRG) has reported that online spending rose by roughly 5% during January'03 over December'02, taking it to 6% of the total retail market:
While mainstream retailing fell by 44% from £29.2bn in December to £16.5bn in January, according to the Office for National Statistics, online sales grew to £999.85m.
IMRG MD Jo Tucker said consumer interest stretched across a broad range of products and services: "Canny shoppers found bargains galore online, and waited for the January sales to make many purchases, thereby applying intense pressure on retail margins."The
