Government To Encourage Internet Use

Posted: 11th Mar, 2003 By: MarkJ
Labour's website has today been updated with word that the Office of the e-Envoy is to set about promoting and encourage new users to try out the Internet:

The initiative will aim to raise awareness of the benefits that the internet can offer to all and break down the barriers that people face to getting online.

Speaking in advance of a meeting at 10 Downing Street where private and voluntary sectors partners will be outlining their contribution to the campaign, Andrew Pinder the e-Envoy said: "The internet plays an important part in everyone's life and as more Government services become available online we want to ensure that people can take advantage of them. In order to achieve this goal it is vital that we first address the issue of access, and this initiative aims to do just this."

Companies and organisations presenting their campaign plans include Age Concern England, Arriva Group, the BBC, BT plc, Citizens Advice, Dixons Stores Group, the National Library for the Blind, the Prince's Trust, the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, Hewlett Packard and Microsoft Ltd.

Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and e-Minister said: "We are not going to allow the digital divide to grow. The internet is for everybody - as are the 6,000 UK online centres. During the campaign, we'll be offering anyone who wants it a free internet introductory session. I'm delighted that so many companies and organisations are working with us in ensuring the public understands the benefits that the internet can play in their lives."

Gordon Lishman Director General, Age Concern England, said: "While older people potentially stand to benefit most from the IT revolution, they are less likely than younger age groups to get on-line. The reasons are not straightforward and may include insufficient income, difficulties with vision and hand movements, or a perception, if they did not use IT at work or school, that IT is not relevant to them. Age Concern is pleased to be working with the e-Envoy on our Silver Surfer Festival. The Festival will enable thousands of older people to discover that new technology can literally open new doors: to new friends, to new learning and new interests."

Bill Gates, Chairman and Chief Software Architect of Micro$oft Corporation, said: "Technology can help people realise their potential -- at work, in school and in their communities. Everyone should have that opportunity."
