The latest official '
Internet Connectivity' report has been released by the governments Office of National Statistics (ONS).
The new report, which can be viewed in Adobe .PDF format
HERE, covers the 12 months from January 2002 up to the end of January 2003. During this period the total number of Internet subscriptions rose by 4.5%.
The month-on-month change between December last year and the end of January this year (2003) accounted for 1.8% of that growth. The total number of dialup connections dropped by -3.8% through the 12 months to January, yet grew an additional 0.9% between Dec'02 and Jan'03.
Amazingly the growth of permanent (broadband) connections grew by 255.7% for the same 12 month period! A further 9% increase in broadband was recorded between Dec'02 and Jan'03.
Broadband connections currently account for 10.8% of the total UK market, up from 10.1% in December 2002. Clearly dialup is continuing to loose out against broadband services, which isn't a surprise.
Basic 0845 (Local Call Rate) services have also declined (down from 37% last year to 25% this year), yet unmetered dialup remains stable. The strong broadband growth is expected to continue.
