Working in partnership with Eutelsat and Newtec, Satellite operator Belgacom has developed a new two-way
Broadband in the Sky service for the cheaper levels of access required by developing countries:
Belgacom DVB-RCS or Broadband in the Sky:
The shared broadband platform via 2-way satellite technology (DVB-RCS) for ISPs.
Belgacom is preparing the latest DVB-RCS satellite technology for roll out. The Belgacom solution will enable ISPs in infrastructure-poor regions the possibility to offer their customers broadband services.
Belgacom works in partnership with Eutelsat and Newtec to provide these services.
Broadband is the access technology in Europe, North America and a number of Asian countries for providing high-speed Internet services. Broadbands rapid development is partly the result of the sophisticated infrastructure present on these continents.
There remain, however, many regions that lack the necessary infrastructure and where Internet use suffers as a result. Belgacom, in cooperation with Eutelsat and Newtec, offers an answer with the Belgacom DVB-RCS solution, which enables broadband via satellite.
DVB-RCS, or Broadband in the Sky
DVB-RCS is an Open Standard technology enabling 2-way broadband communication via satellite, without requiring ground-based infrastructure.
Belgacom DVB-RCS is offered on a shared platform. This means that, unlike other DVB-RCS offerings, Belgacom enables multiple ISPs to use the same platform. This solution allows ISPs to develop their own broadband solution for their customers.
For whom?
Belgacom focuses on ISPs in the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern and Central Europe that wish to offer broadband services in their region but are unable to do so because of a lack of technical infrastructure. Specific advantages:
§ financial: ISPs can realize enormous savings by not having to develop their own infrastructure;
§ time to market: very short the ISP simply needs to connect to the existing hub;
§ flexibility: ISPs are completely free to develop their own broadband offer.
