BT Opens Wi-Fi & Vodafone Jumps In

Posted: 29th Sep, 2003 By: MarkJ
BTs broadband wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) hotspot offering ISP, BTOpenzone, has today begun opening up its Wi-Fi service to other ISPs and operators. Mobile operator Vodafone has become one of the first to signup:

BT OPENS UP ITS PUBLIC WI-FI SITES

BT will allow customers of mobile operators, internet service providers, fixed line operators and even virtual mobile operators to use its network covering airports, hotels, motorway services, coffee shops and railway stations as part of these wholesale agreements.

Wholesale customers will be able to provide wireless broadband services to their customers as part of their own overall service offerings.

The launch of BT Openzone wholesale access is a natural progression from establishing Britain's leading public Wi-Fi network and service last year. This further underlines BT's commitment to Wi-Fi and to Indirect Channels to market.

Last week, the company announced the launch of a ground breaking scheme to put BT Openzone access points in many of the thousands of payphones across Britain, this will greatly increase the coverage of public Wi-Fi bringing access to many more customers.

These innovative deals are expected to add a huge boost to the numbers who can now join the growing Wi-Fi revolution and enjoy the benefits of wireless broadband.

Vodafone followed BTs news with a related announcement of its own:

VODAFONE UK SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH BT OPENZONE TO GIVE CUSTOMERS ACCESS TO WIRELESS LAN HOTSPOTS

Vodafone UK today announced an agreement that will enable it to provide its customers with a Wireless LAN service through the BT Openzone public wireless LAN network. The deal, the first of its kind for Vodafone UK, will complement its existing wireless offerings by allowing its customers to access the Web and their corporate LANs through BT's network of Wireless LAN hotspots. Vodafone UK intends to introduce its Wireless LAN service early next year.

"Our strategy has always been to ensure that we offer our customers the best connectivity solution available," said Gavin Darby, Chief Executive of Vodafone UK, "The BT Openzone Wireless LAN network complements our existing mobile network offering and ensures people can connect using the most appropriate network available."
