UK ISP
Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has written an interesting
BLOG POST about the problems they're having with BT and upgrading their platforms to the operators latest 21st Century Network (21CN / ADSL+) network. It makes for a good read and helps to show the difficulties that ISPs often have to deal with behind the scenes.
The main reasons for upgrading are:-- Improved service to customers in terms of line speeds and latency with ADSL2+
- Improved service to customers still on 20CN by reducing load
- Reduced costs to us (for which we have pre-emptively passed on price reductions)
Unfortunately things are not entirely going to plan (a recurring theme, I know).- Some of the cost reductions we expected are not happening as we expected, which means 20CN lines will continue to cost us a lot more than 21CN lines. Our price reductions have not allowed for this.
- Until we get a new service (WBMC IPStream connect) from BT (which could be 6 months off) we don't make any savings moving lines to 21CN and in fact increase costs. We expected the new service to have been available long before now.
- And the last straw is that BT continue to make serious errors in the regrade process causing customers to be off line for days in some cases.
The last point is the real clincher. We can't really expect customers to tollerate all of their lines on an exchange going off and staying off for days. We have had something like six whole exchanges that have not worked in the last week alone. One is still off from the middle of last week and customers are understandable unhappy.
I can assure you we are doing everything possible to have these faults rectified as soon as possible and escalating at all levels in BT.
It should be noted that WBMC refers to the Managed version of BT's up to 24Mbps ADSL2+ related Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) products. The managed service has suffered some delays, thus slowing the ability of other BT based UK ISPs to launch their own 24Mbps products.
Providers can of course adopt the vanilla WBC, although it lacks some of the managed products benefits, such as being able to work with older IPStream Central Pipes (i.e. the old broadband platform). WBMC could make it easier to migrate existing customers over to the faster products.
