BT's broadband TV (IPTV) service, BT Vision, has suspended new sales of the Setanta sports channel following concerns over the channels financial situation (could go bust). Setanta itself has also stopped taking on new users. To make matters worse BT Vision has just lost its CEO, Dan Marks, over frustrations with subscriber levels and BSkyB's dominance of live Premiership football.
"
I'm leaving BT Vision in a good position, but there are clearly some very big issues with pay-TV," Marks told
The Telegraph. "
There is frustration across BT that Ofcom has failed to engage the dominance of Sky in live Premiership football. Just look at what has happened with Setanta [the Irish sports broadcaster which was on the brink of administration last night".
BT Vision had managed to top 423,000 customers by the end of Q1-2009, an increase from 398,000 in the previous quarter. Dan Marks will leave at the end of June and be replaced by his deputy, Marc Watson. Football seems to be very much the poison chalice of TV services these days.
