A commons committee of MPs has warned the UK and Welsh Assembly governments that urgent action is needed to help solve the lack of broadband coverage in Wales, especially in the country's remote and rural locations. The committee said that public funding would probably be required, as would a greater appreciation of the need for IT skilled staff and the local language.
The Welsh Affairs Committee’s report said:
“Lack of broadband access presents real problems to people in Wales and compromises their work and leisure opportunities, broadband access is no longer a merely a desirable service, it has become an essential utility.”
June's Digital Britain report has already proposed to solve part of this problem with a minimum UK broadband speed of 2Mbps being made available to everybody by 2012. However many fear that this vision may be too little too late and that action is required now and not later. Source:
