The
Broadband Forum has released its latest global broadband and IPTV (Internet TV) statistics for Q2-2009, which was sourced from Point Topic data. The data shows that broadband lines grew by 12.9m during Q2, which brought the global total to 445m. The second quarter was slower than Q1, which by comparison added an additional 16.6m lines.
Broadband Internet TV (IPTV) service growth also remained strong with a global increase of 11%, reaching 26.9 million. The report, which was released during a press conference at Broadband World Forum-Europe, also claimed that IPTV is a major driving force behind uptake of new fibre optic broadband services ( FTTH etc. ).
Happily the UK managed to retain its 6th position in the
Top 10 Broadband Countries table. In fact there were no major changes in the table with most countries showing a fairly balanced rate of broadband growth, except for China that continues to grow very fast.
In terms of technology, fibre optic and wireless broadband continue to gain market share, though more traditional types are still dominant. DSL ( ADSL , SDSL , VDSL2 etc. ) remains king with a staggering 64% share of the market, cable services ( e.g. Virgin Media ) hold 21%, fibre optic cable has grown to 13%, wireless is on 1% and the last 1% is shared between satellite and 'other' technologies.
