The i3 Group (H2O Networks , Fibrecity) has showcased how its new 100Mbps (upload and download) FTTH fibre optic broadband network, which is being deployed via underground sewers in UK cities such as Dundee and Bournemouth, can be used as an open access platform offering an almost dynamic choice of connected UK ISPs.
The self service portal, which is currently being showcased in one of the first homes connected to
Fibrecity Bournemouth, will enable people to easily and instantly select next generation services from a range of ISP and content operators.
i3 Group's CEO, Elfed Thomas said:
"The Fibrecity portal is a fully interactive way to access next generation services from service providers all over the world. When a home is connected to the Fibrecity network, the resident will be given a set top box and router that they can then just plug and play. What they will see on their TV or computer screen is a menu of the services available to them in their area from a variety of service providers.
Our vision is to offer people living in Fibrecities real choice without being restricted to one provider. People will have options and will be able to buy services tailored to their individual needs."
The promoted flexibility appears to be astonishingly attractive and we can only imagine how much consumers of existing broadband services would love to see something similar. Sadly many existing ISPs have their own unique platforms and such a setup is not yet possible.
Delivery of the Fibrecity Bournemouth project is currently still on target for completion in 2011.
