Customers of UK ISP Vispa Internet have been complaining, since approximately 11am this morning, about a raft of connectivity and support problems plaguing the provider. It's understood that many cannot connect and others have experienced extremely slow speeds. Meanwhile Vispa's website has been somewhat unstable and their support lines appear to be out of action too.
At the time of writing we were just about able to load their website, though it took 1 minute to come up. Mercifully their community forums appear to be working a little better and a status update has been posted.
Internet Outage Friday Fri Jan 08, 2010 12:42 pm
At present we are currently experiencing issues with one of the new radius servers. This is a a brand new server installed at our data centre in Manchester sine we upgraded our network to the new 21st Century Network solution. Engineers are working on this at present and as a matter of utmost urgency and hope to have the service restored as soon as possible.
This is also affecting our office number as this uses SIP (VOIP) technology to receive and make calls.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
The radius server is usually a core part of the authentication process (i.e. login) within any ISPs network, though it's unclear why their website and broadband speeds have also been so adversely affected. Presently most customers appear more frustrated by the lack of communication than the service itself being out of action.
It's worth reminding everybody that, while this issue may or may not be related to the current weather problems, many ISPs and businesses are suffering problems as a result of the heavy snowfall (
as reported on Wednesday).
UPDATE 2:26pmVispa's Commercial Director, Adam Binks, has been in touch to inform us that the ISP has suffered a major Denial of Service Attack (DoS / DDoS).
New Vispa Statement:
"As a result of a Major Denial of Service Attack on our network we suffered a severe outage between 1am Friday 8th Jan 10 and 12.30pm Friday 8th Jan 10. All services have now been restored except for our phone system which has been affected as part of the problem. We are currently working with suppliers to have the main numbers diverted to other lines within the office but expect to restore the system by the end of today."
Vispa has also apologised again for the problems and is seeking to assure them that they are taking measures to prevent such an attack happening in the future
