BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has released its latest set of quarterly results to 31st December 2009. The group’s broadband service maintained a steady level of +101,000 quarterly net additions, taking its total ISP subscriber base up to 2,404,000. Some 18% of Sky's customers now choose the operator for all three of TV, broadband and telephony, up +1% on Q3-2009.
Sky has also successfully completed the deployment of its new fully unbundled ( LLU ) broadband platform, which is home to 500,000 of their total Internet access based subscribers. Sky's first half broadband and telephony losses have now halved year on year to £37 million.
It's interesting to note that BSkyB's Interim Results do not appear to include any mention of their future broadband plans, instead focusing almost entirely on 3D and HD TV services. Sky appears to be pleased with its progress and has not at this time taken a view towards adopting BT's new FTTC fibre optic broadband products. It’s probably too early for that.
We will be interested to see how the major market players ultimately approach BT FTTC technology. Many have invested millions to develop their own independent 'up to' 24Mbps ( ADSL2+ ) broadband infrastructure and could thus face difficulty fitting 40Mbps FTTC into existing economic and service models.
