Each year, The Queen attends the Commonwealth Day celebrations in London and gives her speech, which is special because it reflects her own personal views and not those drafted on ministerial advice. This year she chose to talk about technology and warned that access to the internet remains an "
unaffordable" option for many citizens.
It should be pointing out that the remark was perhaps not so much directed towards residents of the UK, which enjoys one of the most affordable broadband ISP markets, as it was a message for some of the still developing commonwealth nations.
The Queen said:
"Advances in modern telecommunications are also having a marked economic effect on people from developing nations in the Commonwealth, helping to transform small to medium-sized businesses. The internet is playing an important part in helping to nurture these fledgling markets but, as yet, it still remains an unaffordable option for too many of our Commonwealth citizens."
At the same time there are still many people in the UK who exist on lower incomes and would find it difficult to get online while also still having to afford all the usual daily bills. Luckily this problem is nowhere near as significant as it was just a few short years ago, thanks in no small part to an aggressive level of market competition.
