Google's popular video website, YouTube, has teamed up with
Blinxbox to offer UK visitors access to a FREE broadband movie streaming service (
YouTube Movies), which initially includes 400 full-length films for your viewing pleasure. Sadly most of the films are either very old or simply not very good, which explains why they're free :cheese: .
It's worth noting that a new survey from Deloitte and YouGov this week found that 55% of UK adults would not watch more online TV if they had a faster broadband ISP connection, which in fairness means that 45% would (glass half full etc.).
The same study also revealed that, of those who currently use internet TV services, 43% use it for less than 15 minutes a day and only 13% watch it for longer than that. Most people (82%) use services like YouTube and the BBC's iPlayer for catch-up TV viewing of shows they missed.
YouTube UK's Head of Video Partnerships, Donagh O’Malley, said:
"This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows. We hope film lovers enjoy the range of titles in this free library, whether catching up on a mainstream hit or delving into the vast archive of classic films from decades past."
It is worth pointing out that Blinkbox itself does at least have a fairly decent array of titles, unlike the rejects they've thrown on to YouTube's platform. No, that's a bit harsh, we're sure some people will love titles like "
Wheels On Meals" or "
Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned". Oh yes! Well they can hardly be much worse than Spider Man 3, Hudson Hawk or War Inc. (seriously, what was that movie about?). Based off the two we just watched, Spider Man 3 looks like a masterpiece.
We'd add a warning about using up too much of your ISP's precious bandwidth too but seriously, that's probably not necessary here. After seeing what the service has to offer only a small number of people will be delving, beyond casual curiosity, into YouTube's movie catalogue.
