Mobile operator Three (3) (Hutchison3G UK) has revealed that it is investing £38.2 Million to expand its Mobile Broadband network in Scotland, which is 37% more per head than they are spending on England. The move will double the number of 3G masts in Scotland, reaching over 1,400 by October 2010.
CEO of 3 Mobile, Kevin Russell, told the Scotsman:"We believe the Scottish expansion is worth it because the demand for people to access the internet through mobile broadband is greater in Scotland than in many other parts of the UK.
The take-up of internet services in Scotland lags the UK, with some calculations that 60% of people in Scotland don't access the internet. That has previously been down to not enough towers with equipment to broadcast strong enough signals."
Indeed part of the higher cost also comes from the fact that Scotland is home to a considerably more mountainous landscape, which requires greater cost to achieve similar coverage.
The move is also good news for the government, which hopes to make a minimum broadband download speed of at least 2Mb available to everybody in the country by 2015.
