The results from 395 respondents (polled in August 2010) to our latest monthly survey have revealed that most people would still rather pick a standalone broadband ISP package (64.8%) than a bundle (35.1%) with other services (tv, phone etc.).
Which do you prefer, a standalone broadband package or bundle?
Standalone (just the internet) - 64.8%
Bundle (net, phone, tv etc.) - 35.1%
Which service do you most desire to be bundled with a fixed line broadband connection?
Line Rental (Calls etc.) - 61.2%
Mobile Broadband - 17.7%
Television - 15.6%
Mobile Phone (Service) - 5.3%
There was a time when consumers distrusted bundles because of the way they would lock several services into a single package and limit your flexibility to change providers. Some ISP also rushed to launch cheap mass-market broadband services in 2005/6 and in so doing failed to offer a reliable product, which resulted in some very dissatisfied customers.
Service quality and market regulation has now improved, although fears surrounding the complexity of changing bundled suppliers and lengthy contracts still exist. The new generation of super-fast broadband services will offer communication providers even more opportunities to exploit (e.g. IPTV) and boost reliability, suggesting that bundles should continue to grow in popularity.
This month's new survey simply asks "
How long is your current broadband/bundle contract?" and questions whether consumers will change ISP when it ends.
