UK ISP Rutland Telecom (RT) has announced that the small rural village of
Essendine (Lincolnshire) will soon become the next to benefit from a new "
super-fast" unbundled 'up to' 40Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) broadband service.
The village, which currently resides too far from the nearest local BT telephone exchange to receive a good internet connection, suffers from poor broadband speeds that average just 0.5Mbps (512Kbps). BT has previously viewed the area as being not economically viable for an upgrade.
Rutland Telecom Tweeted:
"Essendine FTTC now moved to deployment. Avg speeds in village to rise from 0.5 to 25 Mbps. Private investors fund the cabinet. Big Society."
The news follows market research and several recent meetings with the local
Parish Council, where Rutland Telecom proposed to deliver superfast broadband to Essendine from around £35 per month (includes line rental and calls). The ISP required just 40 premises to pre-register for the service and pay a £50 deposit each; a target that was apparently met yesterday.
The initiative, backed by private investment, is not the first and RT are also helping both
