Samsung has demonstrated an early trial of its new WiMAX2 (
IEEE 802.16m) broadband wireless technology and related devices at the
CEATEC show in
Tokyo, Japan. The setup managed to stream Full-HD 3D videos and 16 Full-HD videos on 4 LFD (Large Format LCD) televisions, which ran at the impressive speed of
330Mbps (Megabits per second).
The enhanced WiMAX2 is a joint development that has been headed up by both
Intel and Samsung (
here). It is also
backwards compatible with existing Mobile WiMAX devices, which have been deployed in various countries around the world as a Mobile Broadband solution.
Samsungs Executive VP and Head of the Telecommunication Systems Business, Mr. Woonsub Kim, said:
"Technology never stops evolving. As the demand for data bandwidth and speed grows exponentially, technology has needed to respond.
We strongly believe WiMAX 2 will deliver even richer communication services to customers while unlocking a potential opportunity for service providers."
Presently there are two forms of WiMAX - "
Fixed WiMAX" (
802.16d) for faster Wi-Fi Hotspot / Wi-Fi ISP style network replacement and "
Mobile WiMAX" (
802.16e), for use as a 3G / HSPA replacement by mobile phone operators. Neither have seen any huge uptake in the UK, largely due to a stronger EU focus on rival Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) technology.
WIMAX2 claims to improve upon WiMAX by offering
more efficient, faster, and more converged data communications. The new standard is expected to be
finalised by November 2010 and Samsung plans to introduce the first commercial WiMAX2 solutions towards the end of next year (2011).
