VIDEO Google Connected Kingdom Report Finds UK Internet Worth GBP100 Billion

Posted: 28th Oct, 2010 By: MarkJ
google the connected kingdom ukSearch giant Google and the Boston Consulting Group have, after a couple of days delay, finally uploaded their new Connected Kingdom report and revealed that the UK Internet economy is worth £100 billion a year or 7.2% of GDP, is growing at 10% a year and directly employs 250,000 people.

The report acts as an independent analysis of the value of the UK's Internet economy, the factors that are driving this, how we compare to other countries, and how this will change in the future. It notes that 73% of households have broadband ISP connections and is a good summary of why improving the country's internet access is so important to staying competitive.

Apparently some 59% of that £100bn comes from consumer consumption, such as online shopping. Furthermore it's anticipated that, by 2015, the internet will be worth 10% of GDP.

However the report also highlights some significant differences between regions, which is in no small part due to a lack of adequate broadband provision. As usual, London comes top for internet use, followed by the South East and East of England.

The full report, which can be downloaded below, doesn't tell us much that we haven't already reported on before. Indeed it's very much based on data sources (e.g. OECD, ONS, Ofcom etc.) that we frequently cover.

UPDATE 1:12pm

UK ISP Eclipse Internet has added its comment to Google's report.

Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse Internet, said:

"While it’s great to see the internet making such a positive contribution to the UK economy, today’s research shows a clear digital divide in the UK. Some parts of the country, including Scotland and Northern Ireland, are still lagging far behind London and the south-east when it comes to accessing the internet but this is starting to change. Eclipse is excited to be part of the Fibre roll out for both Cornwall and Northern Ireland which will help to bridge this gap.

Ultimately, we needs to focus on ensuring that every part of the country has the right level of access and where internet services such as Fibre aren’t available, we are developing alternative solutions for our customers."
