The BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) owned ISP
UK Online (UKO), which came included as part of Sky's original
Easynet acquisition in 2005, has finally bitten the bullet by announcing its intention to
close on 14th January 2011. The move will not come as much of a surprise, especially after they stopped accepting new residential subscribers last year.
UK Online has been on uncertain ground ever since BSkyB launched itself into the consumer broadband market several years back. The ISP initially
suspended new residential signups in 2009 due to "
technical issues with the UK Online website", although few customers lent that excuse any credibility.
However Sky are offering existing customers the ability to swap on to their standalone
Sky Broadband Unlimited (unbundled) or more restrictive
Sky Broadband Connect (BT) package, where they will also benefit from a special offer of
6 Months Free Broadband. This promotion is only available until December 20th 2010.
Sky's Statement to Thinkbroadband :
"Since 2005 Sky has operated two residential broadband services, Sky Broadband and UK Online. To better serve customers now and into the future we are going to focus all our efforts on Sky Broadband, which allows us to offer higher quality, better value services.
To ensure that UK Online customers enjoy uninterrupted broadband access, we are contacting them in plenty of time to provide clear advice on their options for finding a new broadband provider. This includes a very attractive offer to join Sky Broadband, which offers great value, truly unlimited downloads and the UK’s most consistent speeds."
Customers who choose not to take Sky's offer can request a MAC (
Migration Authorisation Code) by calling UK Online on
08442 410 532. It's very disappointing to see Sky take such action, especially at this festive time of year. Forcing your customers to change ISP over the Christmas period isn't very polite. Further details are available on UK Online's website.
