The
Ryedale District Council (RDC) has teamed up with
NYnet to help bring "
super-fast" broadband internet access to businesses in the
Ryedale area of
North Yorkshire. The project will officially begin when a new fibre optic cable or
PoP (Point of Presence) is run to
Ryedale House (Malton).
Keith Knaggs, Leader of Ryedale District Council, said:
"I welcome the active role of the District Council in bringing genuine broadband to more and more businesses in Malton and Norton, and look forward to other parts of Ryedale being included as soon as possible. This is the business of tomorrow coming to us today."
The faster connection, which could in theory deliver download speeds of up to
100Mbps, will enable businesses with a requirement for a high speed internet connection to link directly into NYnet's existing high-speed broadband network via a fibre optic connection to the PoP at Ryedale House.
Additional Project Details
Ryedale District Council is hoping to expand the availability of high quality broadband services even further. The option being considered is to install 'WiMax' transmitters/receivers at Ryedale House. This would allow businesses that want a high-speed connection with a guaranteed level of service (currently not available with ADSL broadband via telephone cables), but do not need a direct fibre optic link, to connect wirelessly to the NYnet network.
Initially the project is likely to service businesses in Malton and Norton (including York Road and Norton Grove industrial estates), however if this pilot is successful it could cover other areas of Ryedale.
NYnet also have been successful in a bid for a major new government-backed scheme to transform broadband access for rural communities in North Yorkshire. The 'Rural Market Testing Project' aims to see super-fast broadband introduced in up to 27 Market Towns in North Yorkshire where broadband provision was previously considered economically unviable.
As a result, NYnet aims to dramatically expand its programme of superfast broadband roll-out to North Yorkshire's towns and villages, directly benefiting an estimated 11,400 businesses and also 220,000 people.
NYnet was formed in March 2007 as a
public sector controlled private limited company and recently completed its primary high-speed broadband rollout for
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) in June 2010 (
