According to BT "
tens of thousands" of homes and businesses in the
West End of London have lost access to broadband ISP and phone services after significant
water damage (flood) from an adjacent business triggered a fire at the
Gerrard Street Exchange.
BT Statement
BT can confirm that water damage from an adjacent business has disrupted power supplies to an exchange in the west end of London. A number of customers in Central London are currently experiencing a loss of service.
Following clearance from the Fire Brigade, BT's engineers are on site and working around the clock to repair the damage and restore service as quickly as possible. BT would like to apologise to all customers impacted.
Given the complexity of the damage, it is not yet possible to accurately predict when all services will be fully restored. BT will issue further updates as the situation changes.
Thankfully there are currently
no reports of any injuries at the site, while the outage itself has also affected a multitude of other ISPs and phone providers. At the time of writing BT was able to confirm that power had now been restored to the exchange building, although service restoration was expected to "
take some time".
UPDATE 22nd December 2010The situation was finally resolved late yesterday evening.
