UK ISP Eclipse Internet has today announced an update to its 'up to' 40Mbps (Megabits per second) FTTC based "
Fibre Broadband" packages, which will now offer
assured minimum throughput speeds of 12Mbps.
According to Eclipse, existing "
Fibre" customers already experiencing
average throughput speeds of 35Mbps. However, the new announcement means that,
during peak hours, users will always have a minimum real world speed of 12Mbps.
Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse Internet, said:
"This marks the continuation of our next generation fibre offering. The new assured throughput speed of 12Mbps will enable businesses to benefit from increased connection speeds and services when streaming applications such a VPN, video conferencing and VoIP."
It may be worth pointing out that other FTTC ISPs are also able to offer this as a
feature of the technology. BT Wholesale also recently introduced a slower minimum speed threshold of 5Mbps for a special longer phone line FTTC product (

At present Eclipse's FTTC packages appear to be firmly aimed at business or home office users, with prices for a
100GB usage allowance package starting from
£39.95 +vat per month. The install fee is also set at £75 +vat, which other ISPs are currently offering for free or significantly less.
