Popular ISP Be Broadband has informed customers that it is working towards adding full IPv6 support into its network. The news follows shortly after it was revealed last week that all of the remaining IPv4 internet address blocks had finally been allocated (
here).
However BE's customers probably don't have to worry just yet as the provider, which is owned by O2 UK, admits to having "
hundreds of thousands" of available IPv4 addresses left in reserve. By contrast the O2 group only managed to add
+13,800 new broadband customers in Q3-2010.
BE Broadband Statement
IPv6 is a major change in the way the internet is connected worldwide so it needs us to make changes in our network, websites to make changes in the way they are hosted and more.
Work is underway in our network to enable IPv6 and we’re currently planning internal tests to understand the impact on our network and customers. After that testing is complete later this year we'll be able to finalise our rollout plans and share them with you.
BE has promised to make a further announcement "
when we pass something interesting", although some customers have already begun to criticise their late move towards proper IPv6 support. In fairness the lack of affordable consumer IPv6 capable routers would have made it difficult for them to offer it sooner anyway.
