Rural Broadband, a small UK ISP that concentrates on delivering internet access solutions to the remotest locations, has today become one of the first to reveal a
full range of consumer prices for
Avanti Communication's new 10Mbps capable
HYLAS 1 broadband Satellite. The service itself will be
launched on 20th April 2011 and bookings are already being taken.
According to their website the new service will cost
£599 inc. VAT to install, which is a fairly normal price point for such solutions. There's also a
12 month contract to consider and any usage above the initial cap is charged at
£6 per GigaByte (GB). The packages themselves are set out as follows.
Much as expected the HYLAS1 packages are
still expensive and no match for fixed line prices, although the significantly larger usage allowances and faster upload speeds on mid-range options do somewhat make up for this. By comparison £20-£30 per month will usually net you a 3.6-4Mbps connection with an allowance of less than 3GB from existing
Eutelsat and
Astra based ISPs.
However, any perceived product superiority from HYLAS1 could be very short lived if some of the recent price information about Eutelsat's forthcoming KA-SAT (Tooway10mb) service turn out to be true (
here). Astra has also promised to boost its service speeds to similar levels.
