NETGEAR, a worldwide manufacturer of popular networking equipment, has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they plan to "
roll out IPV6 in a firmware upgrade to several supported products" (i.e. broadband ISP routers) at some point over the "
next several quarters". However, it's still unclear which consumer broadband routers will be included.
NETGEAR's Bob Burke comments on their IPV6 support plans:
"NETGEAR has a policy of providing regular firmware updates on currently supported products to meet new requirements. With respect to IPV6, many of our current routers are already IPV6 certified and in the next several quarters, NETGEAR plans to roll out IPV6 in a firmware upgrade to several supported products. NETGEAR supports the IPv6 standard and is working with several Service Providers globally to ensure a smooth migration path for our customers."
The IPv6 internet address standard is crucial because the older IPv4 (e.g.
85.23.56.198) addresses, which are assigned to your computer each time you go online, have all been allocated by the global
Regional Internet Registries (RIR). As a result the supply of free IPv4 addresses is
slowly running out (i.e. over the next couple of years, though estimates do vary).
In our exclusive interview with NETGEAR's ISP liaison,
Bob Burke, we question why consumer router manufacturers have been so slow to add proper IPv6 support into their products, which could potentially cause problems further down the line, and ask what new features we can expect to see from future hardware.
