Bromley Council, a London UK borough in the city's South East district, has been heavily criticised by the
Labour MP for Lewisham West and Penge, Jim Dowd, for deliberately
delaying the rollout of superfast broadband ISP services.
Jim Dowd said (Bromley Times 24):"BT are rolling out super-fast broadband across the country but may have to leave Bromley behind after council officials categorised the roll-out as ‘major works’, making the planning process lengthy and complicated.
This is the typically unhelpful attitude towards the north-west of the borough I’ve come to expect from Bromley’s bureaucrats, to be honest. Nearly every other authority in the country has classed this roll-out as ‘standard works’ so why is Bromley being so difficult?
It shows how out of date and out of touch this council is, holding back progress and denying residents these opportunities. I will take this up with the appropriate Secretary of State."
However, Councillor Colin Smith (
Conservative MP) has retaliated by questioning why Dowd is "
fighting so hard for BT's interests locally at potential cost to the long-term visual amenities of Bromley’s residents".
It's known that not everybody in the area has been happy with the size and placement of BT's new superfast FTTC broadband cabinets, with BT noting that it had experienced more "
red tape in Bromley than in other parts of the UK". Well if they don't want them then we probably know a few million others who would jump at the chance.
