Sky ( Sky Broadband ), a UK based Satellite TV and telecommunications company, has announced its intention to merge their online broadband TV catch-up service (
Sky Player) and their mobile TV platform (
Sky Mobile TV) into a single solution called
Sky Go.
Sky Go will be
free to all of Sky TV's existing customers and should provide "
flexible access" to Sky content across multiple devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, PC and Mac).
Non-Sky customers will also be given access (note: not until August), although you will have to stump up for a separate £14-£40 monthly subscription.
The newly rebranded service, which will be known simply as 'Sky' on the
XBox 360 and
Fetch TV platforms (currently
Sky Player), aims to
launch on 6th July 2011. Sadly each home will only be entitled to register up to a
maximum of two devices.
Stephen Van Rooyen, Deputy MD of Sky's Customer Group, said:
"The explosion of smartphones and tablets demonstrates the increasing consumer demand for accessing entertainment and communicating on the move. We have already responded to this by offering a range of services, including live TV, across many new innovative platforms and devices, like laptops and iPhones.
Clearly the consumer appetite is there, and it's growing. In responding to that, and to create even more value, choice and flexibility for our customers, we are now going to offer online and mobile access to Sky content at no extra charge. The future support of a nationwide Wi-Fi network will help us supercharge that experience further still."
Sky officially acquired Wi-Fi Hotspot operator The Cloud at the start of this year, which gave it ownership of
over 4,500 public wireless internet locations across the UK and will be used to support the new service. Further details about this are expected to be announced "
in due course", which means they aren't quite ready yet.
