BTOpenreach has revealed the final pricing for its 110Mbps
Fibre-to-the-Premises ( FTTP ) fibre optic broadband service, which was first announced during October 2010 and officially added into
BT's portfolio of products during March 2011.
FTTP technology
takes a fibre optic cable directly to your home, which allows it to achieve significantly faster speeds (future performance should rise to 1Gbps). Until recently FTTP only offered a top speed product of 100Mbps, which had an annual stand-alone rental of just over £255 +vat and a one-off £75 connection fee.
By contrast the new 110Mbps product, which comes with a 20Mbps prioritised rate downstream bandwidth capability and upload speeds of 15Mbps, is almost identical in price. It will cost
£258.48 when bought as a stand-alone service or £157.80 if purchased with a related copper voice service (WLR or MPF) under BT's Transition Product commercial terms. The connection charge remains unchanged. This represents wholesale costs for ISPs and not consumer prices, which will always be higher to help cover profits, bandwidth and other services.
BT has also announced the launch price for an
FTTP Expedite facility. This allows ISPs to order an earlier provision date when the appointment availability exceeds the standard product lead time. This facility will cost an extra £158.40 (only raised if the revised Customer Deliver Date is met), which is on top of the existing £75 connection charge.
It's crucial to point out that FTTP has faced many delays (
example) and as a result its
commercial launch is running a bit behind schedule, although BT still expects to launch the service before the end of this year (Q4-2011). BT said in March 2011 that it hoped to reach approximately 270,000 UK homes and businesses with its new FTTP service by September 2011, which should rise to 2.5 Million in 2015.
