Thecaretaker, a regular ISPreview contributor, has celebrated after their
3 year long local campaign for better internet access finally culminated in BT adding both
Eastbourne and
Hastings (
East Sussex) to their UK superfast FTTC broadband rollout map for 2012 (
here).
The
Filsham broadband campaign warned in 2008 that local residents and businesses could only expect to receive broadband download speeds of 1Mbps or less (many were still on dialup and other low-income families didn't even have fixed telephone lines). At the time it was suggested that such poor performance could be
putting the education of an estimated 3,500 local pupils at risk.
East Sussex Council Leader, Peter Jones, said:
"This is brilliant news for Eastbourne and Hastings and East Sussex as a whole. This will help to boost our economy and shows what can be achieved when all the partners work together for our residents and businesses. We will now continue to lobby with the aim of securing this super-fast broadband for the entire county – especially for our rural areas where access to this technology is vital.
However, our work on this isn't just about seeking support from BT or from regional and national Government. We have set aside £2 million from our own capital programme to support the rollout of high-speed broadband and we'll ensure that this issue remains a top priority."
It's estimated that up to
61,000 homes and businesses could benefit from BT's forthcoming upgrade, which should make more reliable download speeds of up to 40Mbps available to the area. However, it should be stressed that BT's FTTC solution rarely covers 100% of premises, which means that some locations are likely to remain in broadband slow-spots with pricey Satellite as their only viable choice.
