UPD UK ISP BE Broadband Seeks Superfast Broadband Service Launch in 2011

Posted: 28th Jun, 2011 By: MarkJ
be broadband uk isp logoThe Managing Director (MD) of popular ISP Be Broadband UK, Chris Stening, has said that he is "determined to offer a fibre product" that is capable of delivering an "unlimited and unshaped" service to their customers. Sadly anybody hoping for an affordable solution will be disappointed as Stening claims that such a service is "unlikely to be the cheapest in the market".

The remarks follow similar comments made by Stening during March of this year (here), when he admitted that it was "really hard" to make such a service work with their current model of unlimited use packages and the lack of a competing/cheaper unbundled ( LLU ) FTTC service.

BE's MD, Chris Stening, said today:

"There's terrific demand for a fibre service and I hear all your feedback online and by phone. We’re determined to offer a fibre product with all the things you love about BE – great service, award winning support and super fast speeds, no matter how much you download.

BE members know that speed is affected by much more than the materials of the cabling that runs into the cabinet though. In practice that means an unlimited, unthrottled connection from BE could be faster for downloading films than a fibre connection with traffic management.

So our plans for fibre have to be something unlimited and unshaped too, otherwise it simply defeats the object of having greater speed. It’s great to be told you could get speeds up to some high level, but with traffic management it is unlikely you’ll get it for long. We are unlikely to be the cheapest in the market but we are determined to be the best."

Stening claims that BE would ideally like to "launch our service later this year" and is looking to introduce some form of "pre-registration programme" in the very near future, which will be used to gauge demand.

It's important not to forget that BE is now owned by O2 UK, which will also be looking to launch its own range of 'up to' 40Mbps style FTTC broadband services. So far this has proven difficult due to the high cost of BT's wholesale solution.

UPDATE 29th June 2011

As you might expect, O2's broadband boss has now made a similar commitment (here).
