The Managing Director (MD) of UK business ISP
Fluidata,
Piers Daniell, has informed ISPreview.co.uk that last week's Quarter Final matches at the international
Wimbledon Tennis Championships caused office internet traffic to jump by "
nearly 70%" during some afternoons.
The ISP reported seeing surges across their core network links as traffic peaked in the afternoon, which was caused by office workers hopping online to catch-up on Wimbledon via the web-based BBC iPlayer video streaming service.
Fluidata's Michael Fevyer added:
"Probably just a taster as to what our industry can expect next year when the Olympics get into full swing. Obviously not a problem for some networks but I am sure it will highlight where others have been cutting costs rather than investing into their infrastructure."
Another ISP, Eclipse Internet UK, had warned last month (
here) that "
computer chaos" and a broadband "
meltdown" could occur if firms followed the TV Licensing and CIPD advice, which suggested that bosses should allow their employees to watch live TV streams of Wimbledon (UK Tennis Tournament) from the office.
