Cable giant
Virgin Media has announced that its new "
ultrafast"
100Mbps (10Mbps upload) broadband ISP product can now
reach more than 6.5 million homes (25% of the UK), which is up from 4 million at the start of June 2011.
The service costs from just £35 per month (
£17.50 with the current 6 months half-price promotion) when combined with a £13.50
Virgin Phone Line service (£45 when bought as a standalone product). It includes unlimited downloads (free of any heavy Traffic Management limits), a Virgin Media Super Hub (wireless modem router and USB adapter), unlimited online storage, Virgin Media Security: Total and more.
Jon James, Virgin's Executive Director of Broadband, said:
"Virgin Media has consistently led the greatest developments in broadband in the UK and we’re proud to continue this tradition with the roll-out of our 100Mb service. But we’re not stopping there - we continue to develop broadband technology with trials for 200Mb taking place across the country and we have deployed a cutting-edge 1.5Gb cable broadband trial in East London. Only Virgin Media has the network to drive forward the UK’s digital economy, giving Brits a true world-class digital entertainment service at their fingertips."
The
EuroDOCSIS3 (cable technology) based rollout began at the end of last year and is
expected to continue until mid-2012, when it will be able to reach half of the country (13 million households). Virgin is then likely to begin planning for a 200Mbps service with 20Mbps upstream speeds.
