The incumbent phone and broadband ISP for
Hull and
East Riding in Yorkshire (UK),
KC, has announced plans to bring superfast fibre optic based broadband internet access services to almost
15,000 homes in the area by replacing existing copper telecoms cables .
According to Ofcom, some 50% of people in Hull have a broadband connection and receive
average sync download speeds of 6.4Mbps; just 9.7% have speeds of less than 2Mbps. Further details of the 18 month project, which could offer download speeds of up to 100Mbps, are expected to be announced tomorrow.
KC's CEO, Kevin Walsh, said:
"As services like iPlayer and YouTube become more popular and as households connect to the internet using iPads, smartphones and gaming consoles, as well as traditional PCs, the need for more bandwidth and faster download speeds is increasing.
Installing fibre means we'll be able to meet the needs of the most connected households not just today, but well into the future too."
However the project could face real competition.
Thisishull reports that
MS3 Communications is building its own fibre optic network in Hull that will eventually reach 25,000 homes. NextGenUs ( Fibrestream ) also has a smaller project for 800 homes. We'll add further details to this article tomorrow.
UPDATE 22nd July 2011Further details have now been released. KC will use a number of fibre technologies as part of its deployment, including
Fibre To The Home (FTTH), which is the installation of fibre all the way from the telephone exchange to a customers’ home. More than 3,000 local businesses already receive superfast broadband from KC using fibre technology and consumers will soon join them.
KC CEO, Kevin Walsh, said:
"Our fibre deployment is the latest stage of our ongoing work and investment to make sure our customers in Hull and East Yorkshire have access to the very best broadband in the UK.
During the past year we’ve upgraded our network and increased its capacity so that the vast majority of our customers can already achieve download speeds that would be the envy of broadband users elsewhere in the UK.
This upgrade of our core network was the first stage in our programme to provide next-generation broadband and it’s meant we can offer speeds that are more than fast enough to meet the current demands of most customers.
The trend is for people to spend much more time online, and use services that need much more bandwidth. Installing fibre is the next stage of our programme and means we’ll be able to meet the needs of the most bandwidth-hungry households today and in the future."
KC’s first installation of FTTH will be in
Woodmansey, where around 330 households who are already Karoo customers will be able to take advantage of super-fast download speeds by the Autumn.
