YouView (
Project Canvas), a subscription free broadband internet based video-on-demand and catch-up television ( IPTV ) service that is expected to be used by several major ISPs (e.g. BT , TalkTalk etc.), has confirmed that it is still very much "
on track to launch in early 2012".
The Joint Venture project between the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, TalkTalk, Arqiva and Channel 5 also announced the appointment of
Chris Bramley as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Bramley has previously held the position of
Chief Architect at BSkyB.
The news follows shortly after a new
Digital TV Research study (
here) claimed that less than 1 million UK homes will pay for IPTV services by 2016, which will keep related revenues low (£137m). This suggests that DTVR is not expecting YouView or similar services to have any significant impact upon the market.
