Mobile operator Three (3) has announced that its unlimited "
all-you-can-eat" (AYCE) Mobile Broadband data upgrade will, from 7th October 2011, be made available to all new and existing contract Smartphone customers for an
extra charge of just £3 (monthly).
The unlimited data tariff had previously only been available on selected contract (e.g.
The One Plan) or Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) plans. Three (3) claims that the new move is "
aimed at eliminating data fear and the worry of massive out-of-bundle data charges".
Thomas Malleschitz, 3UK's Marketing Director, said:
"The One Plan quickly became our number one contract tariff and our all-you-can-eat PAYG offer is our most popular bundle. From October 7th we’re opening up all-you-can-eat to everyone else, starting from as little as £18 per month.
Our customers tell us that their use of data goes up significantly over the lifetime of their contracts, as they do more and more with their handset. All-you-can-eat data means that they don’t have to worry, they can have that peace of mind for the long term on a contract of their choice."
The operator claims that more than 98% of upgrading customers are now opting for a high-end data-hungry device (e.g. iPad2, iPhone4 etc.). As a result the amount of data customers are using is "
continuing to grow rapidly".
Three (3) claims that, on average, an
iPhone 4 owner in February 2011 consumed 488MB (MegaBytes) of data but in August 2011 this figure had shot up to almost 1.2GB (1200MB)! The operator remains confident that it can handle the surging demand.
