The latest anecdotal monthly consumer broadband ISP speed testing results from
Broadband.co.uk, which covers the past month of September 2011, has discovered that the
average UK internet download speed declined ever so slightly from 8.056Mbps at the end of August to
7.998Mbps now.
Meanwhile the
average upload speed has once again managed to maintain a fairly stable rate, increasing by a tiny amount from 1.209Mbps to
1.258Mbps over the same period. As usual Virgin Media remains the
fastest overall ISP, although BT has risen to 2nd place in both tables, followed very closely by Eclipse Internet UK.
Top UK ISPs for Download Speed
1. Virgin Media – 14.793Mbps
2. BT – 7.836Mbps
3. Eclipse Internet – 7.303Mbps
4. O2 ( Be Broadband ) – 6.693Mbps
5. TalkTalk (Tiscali) – 5.100Mbps
6. Sky Broadband – 4.488Mbps
7. PlusNet – 3.890Mbps
8. Orange – 3.700Mbps
9. AOL – 3.415Mbps
Top UK ISPs for Upload Speed
1. Virgin Media - 2.308Mbps
2. BT - 1.498Mbps
3. Eclipse Internet - 1.093Mbps
4. O2 ( Be Broadband ) - 0.902Mbps
5. TalkTalk (Tiscali) - 0.626Mbps
6. Orange - 0.587Mbps
7. Sky Broadband - 0.569Mbps
8. AOL - 0.401Mbps
9. PlusNet - 0.395Mbps
It's interesting to note that most ISPs, except Orange UK, have managed to boost their overall download performance during September. BT and O2 ( Be Broadband ) in particular appeared to have seen some strong gains. The same can also be said for upload performance, albeit to a lesser degree.
As usual we must stress that anecdotal averages like this will in reality have only the smallest bearing on the speed that your particular telephone line may receive. Service quality and available capacity varies from place to place and home to home.
