Telecoms operator Orange UK (
Everything Everywhere) has this week launched
free online security and parental control software for all of its new and existing fixed line Home Broadband ISP customers. The provider claims to be the "
first home broadband" operator to do this, although many others already do something similar.
The news follows yesterday's announcement of a new
Code of Practice between the UK government and four major ISPs ( TalkTalk , BT , Virgin Media and Sky Broadband ), which all agreed to provide new customers (e.g. parents) with an option at the point of purchase to
block adult web content as part of their subscription process (
here).
By comparison Orange isn't offering its own integrated web blocking service and is instead bundling a more familiar suit of
McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2012 + Parental Control software. The service is also only free for the first 12 months (saves £49.99) but it can be installed on three computers.
Sylvain Thevenot, Marketing Director for Orange, told ISPreview.co.uk:
"We advocate measures that provide parents with a choice of tools, enabling them to take extra steps to manage their childrens internet access if they should choose to do so. It is worth noting that further to the pledges made in this proposed new code, Orange has already announced offering award-winning, simple to install Parental Controls software free to all its home broadband customers.
The offer is irrespective of the broadband package they are on and will be available to use within weeks rather than a year's time. It covers protection to help address a variety of areas parents are concerned their children may access over and above adult imagery.
We are also working hard to ensure all our customers receive details on the options available to them, both at point of purchase and later during their home broadband term - so they can be sure to take an informed decision that is most appropriate for them."
At the time of writing we can't find much information about the new security package on Orange's Home Broadband page, although we've been assured that it should be there from 15th October. Customers will then need to go to Orange's '
Your Account' section and follow the online instructions to benefit.
