Netflix, a global broadband internet based
unlimited film and TV subscription service, has today confirmed that it plans to join
Google Movies,
iTunes and
LoveFilm by launching its service into both the United Kingdom and Ireland during
early 2012.
The USA based "
all-you-can-eat" online movie service has been aiming to launch in the UK for awhile, but has until recently found it difficult to get the necessary licensing. Sadly further details about the service, including pricing, content and supported devices, will not be announced until closer to launch.
One recent study (
here) claimed that
less than 1 million UK homes will pay for IPTV services by 2016 (very poor). This suggests that YouView and or similar services would not be expected to have any significant impact upon the market, which is perhaps a bit presumptuous.
The Netflix service, which will give ISPs yet another network capacity and congestion related headache to worry about, will be available across multiple supported devices (e.g. PCs, Macs, mobile tablets and phones) "
for one low monthly subscription price".
