The UK "
champion" for digital inclusion and head of the
Race Online 2012 initiative,
Martha Lane Fox, has announced the launch of a new campaign today that essentially challenges the 30 million daily internet users in the UK to ‘
Give an Hour’ and pass on their skills to those who aren’t yet online.
Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox, said:
"There are still 8.7 million people in the UK who’ve never made a free Skype call, explored and expanded their interests or got a great deal online. Yet, it’s impossible to imagine life without the web for anyone who uses it regularly.
We live in an age when ‘digital’ is a vital life skill: as basic as knowing how to read and write. 90% of new jobs require it: you’re 25% more likely to get work when you have web skills and once in work you’ll earn up to 10% more. It’s simply unacceptable that so many people are still unable to benefit from what the web can offer.
Our extraordinary mix of cross sector partners have worked tirelessly to kick start a national conversation around the Go ON Give an Hour campaign and encourage everyone in the UK to inspire real online behavioural change when the clocks go back at the end of the month.
An hour is long enough to give everyone a taste of the web, and show people the amazing benefits of using the internet."
Anyone can make a pledge online and join the "
thousands of digital champions" who have already signed up to the
Digital Champion Network at
http://go-on.co.uk/giveanhour. The campaign, which begins today at various venues across the country, is actually centred around
30th October 2011; when the clocks go back and everyone in the UK gains an extra hour (sort of).
