The
Norfolk Rural Community Council (NRCC), AF Affinity and ISP
InTouch Systems have secured funding to jointly launch a new scheme called
ThinkingWISP, which aims to bring faster broadband wireless ( Wi-Fi ) internet access speeds of up to
10Mbps to rural homes and businesses in northern
Norfolk.
According to
EDP24, the system has been in development for over a year and was constructed with funding of just
£37,000 from Defra and the EU. It works by making use of a transmitter at
Norwich Airport to link with a mast in
Marsham, which then distributes the signal in all directions to small home aerials.
George Bell, Chairman of AF Affinity, said:
"Many of our members rely on the internet to run rural businesses and farms. Getting fast, reliable and high quality broadband is essential to living and working in the countryside."
At present the service is only available to areas around
Aylsham,
Cawston and
Reepham but the future aim is to improve this. Service prices start at just £15.99 inc. VAT per month for a basic 3Mbps package (0.5Mbps uploads) with a small 10GB usage allowance.
The biggest business focused package offers speeds of up to 10Mbps (3Mbps uploads) with "unlimited" usage for £50.99. It's worth remembering that customers don't need a BT phone line to benefit and could thus potentially save money by going completely wireless (e.g. Skype).
