Extremely stormy weather in
Scotland and the
North of England, which in some places saw winds gusting to over 160MPH, have over the past 24 hours+
caused significant disruption to the BT network of telephone and broadband internet access services.
BT said that a number of areas have been affected by
disruption to electricity supplies and that parts of its "
overhead network" have also sustained damage.
BT Openreach Statement (Yesterday)
Police have advised that all non-essential travel should be stopped and in some areas our engineers are not able to travel and get to appointments. We have also had reports of some localised flooding and we are expecting this to get worse as the storm passes through.
There is obviously an impact on our ability to deliver services to customers in the worst affected areas; however we will continue to work hard to rectify the situation once the weather improves.
The weather has now begun to improve and BT has been working to restore any related outages. A large number of those problems should now be resolved, although unresolved broadband outages are still being reported in parts of Scotland (Dialling codes affected: 01339, 01651 and 01887).
UPDATE 10th December 2011Yesterday afternoon this situation was upgraded to a national status of
Matters Beyond Our Reasonable Control (MBORC). During this period some work, such as broadband or phone upgrades and provision, will be given a significantly lower priority than essential repairs.
