Akamai's latest quarterly State of the Internet Q3 2011 report has revealed that the average global broadband internet (ISP) download speed has risen by 4.5% in the quarter to 2.7Mbps (Megabits/sec). By comparison the UK average speed increased from 5Mbps to 5.1Mbps over the same period, which caused our world ranking to fall from 25th to 27th place.
