More than 400 residents stationed at the
RAF Leeming base in
North Yorkshire UK will "
soon" be brought out of broadband "
Not Spot" status thanks to a new
10Mbps capable internet connection from
NYnet and local wireless ( Wi-Fi ) ISP
ILoveBroadband.
At present families located at RAF Leeming suffer from
very poor internet connectivity that makes even simple tasks, such as sending emails, slow and unreliable. By contrast the new wireless system makes effective use of NYnet's
fibre 100Mbps connection at the local primary school to deliver a faster and more stable service.
Martyn Boswell, Managing Director of ilovebroadband, said:
"The Leeming project was an interesting challenge. There was a lot of work undertaken with various partners on the base to get permissions to host equipment on buildings to ensure the maximum coverage. We are delighted that this is all in place and we are now rolling out the network across the married quarters, this should be completed by the first quarter of this year."
Paul Crane, NYnet's Business Development Director, said:
"NYnet have been working closely with the RAF on this project for over 3 years now, so it is extremely satisfying for us to see the network being delivered. We also need to thank the RAF Leeming School for being the hub for the connection; they could see the benefit to their students of having access to the internet for school work at home."
At the time of writing some
100 connections on the network (from a potential total of around 440) have already gone live and many more will follow as coverage expands towards completion, which is due by the end of Q1-2012. Meanwhile NYnet and ILoveBroadband will continue to expand their service into other parts of North Yorkshire and
East Riding.
NYnet itself is a public and private sector commercial venture that was created in 2007 to help provide a better communications network for local citizens, business and public sector bodies. The venture is lead by
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) with support from the government and other groups.
Prices for the new service start as low as £14.99 per month for a 5Mbps symmetrical connection, while the 10Mbps service doubles speeds for £19.99 per month.
