Councillors and employees working at the
Milton Keynes Council (MKC) were left feeling very embarrassed and practically disorganised this week after it emerged that their
internet access had been cut by UK ISP TalkTalk over an
unpaid bill dispute.
According to the
Milton Keynes Citizen, it was
the third time in 15 months that such action had taken place but for once it wasn't TalkTalk's fault. An investigation is underway, although the finger of blame has already been pointed towards the council's finance department.
MK Councillor, Chris Williams, said:
"After digging around, I found that it was because there were unpaid bills, the connection was cut. I’ve spoken to chief executive David Hill about it and he has said he will look into it, but it’s just not good enough.
This sort of thing should not be happening. If the shoe was on the other foot and someone hadn’t paid their council tax three times, we’d have them hauled in front of the courts."
Few people would describe councils as being pillars of good financial organisation and we suspect that even fewer will do that now. Hopefully they don't suffer a similar problem with their forthcoming Broadband Plans.
